Basic Group Riding Skills Classes

This Group Riding Skills class is targeted at riders planning to ride one of the Texas MS150 rides this year.  The Basic Class is designed for first time BP MS 150 Riders and experienced riders with 1-2 years of previous BP MS 150 experience.  It is required by several of the teams. This Class is based on content developed by the League of American Bicyclists and taught by qualified instructors (League Certified Instructors or USA Cycling Coaches).

The Basic Class is 1 hour of Classroom Instruction (held at the training site), followed by 2 hours of “On the Bike” Skills.  The objective of the class is to provide information related to SAFE Riding for  riding the BP MS 150. 

Participants will learn:

-                 Primary Bike Safety

-                 Bicycle Safety Equipment (Helmet)

-                 Defensive Riding with vehicle traffic and other Cyclists

-                 Vehicle Rules and traffic laws for Cyclists

-                 Proper signaling and communications

-                 Special Safety Considerations when riding in a Paceline (and paceline etiquette)

-                 ABC Quick Check for Bicycle Maintenance

-                 Importance and Proper Hydration and Nutrition for a long distance bike event

-                 BP MS 150 Specific Safety Information (rest stops, SAGs, Ride Marshalls, etc)

On the Bike Skill Instruction and Practice:

-                 Obstacle Avoidance

-                 Emergency Braking

-                 Cornering

-                 Pace Line and proximity riding (riding close to other riders)

Advanced Group Riding Skills Classes

This Group Riding Skills class is targeted at riders planning to ride one of the Texas MS150 rides this year.  The Advanced Class is designed for experienced riders with 2-3 years of previous BP MS 150 experience.  First time MS 150 riders are not permitted to take this class because it builds on knowledge already provided in the Basic Class.  This can be accepted by most teams to meet the Group Riding Skills Class requirement.  This Class is based on content developed by the League of American Bicyclists and taught by qualified instructors (League Certified Instructors or USA Cycling Coaches).

The Advanced Class is 1 hour of Classroom Instruction (similar to the Basic Instruction), followed by 2 hours of Advanced “On the Bike” Skills.  The objective of the class is to reinforce Safety Information and learn increased bike handling skills.
